Overwhelm is something we all experience from time to time and is never fun to deal with. With everything going on in the world right now I notice I have been feeling overwhelmed a lot more lately than I normally would. Tasks like going grocery shopping are taking a lot longer to complete, my work schedule has changed quite a bit, and the constant feeling of needing to be productive right now all leaves me feeling overwhelmed and defeated fairly often.
The last week or so has been better as I feel I’ve finally gotten a handle on our new normal. I have implemented a few things into my daily routine to help me feel less stressed and more relaxed. So, I thought I would share them with you in case you’ve been feeling similar to me these last few weeks!
Take Deep Breaths
I recently learned about the 4-7-8 technique and it has helped me so much! If you don’t know what that is, it’s when you take a deep breath for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 7 seconds, and exhale for 8 seconds. A few rounds of this and I can see my BPM on my Fitbit drop and I feel so calm. This trick is great if you deal with anxiety or have a hard time falling asleep as well!
Moving my body, whether it’s taking Nova for a walk or doing some yoga, always helps clear my head. By exercising I can take my mind off of whatever is bothering me and focus it on something that actually serves me. This could be some light movement like walking or yoga; or could be a more intense workout if that’s something you prefer!
Make a To-Do List
If I’m feeling overwhelmed one of the best things I can do is make a to-do list. By writing everything out I can visually see what needs to be done; and I can stop stressing about forgetting something. It helps get all the tasks taking up room in my brain out so I can focus on one thing at a time and know I’m still going to get everything accomplished. It’s also super satisfying getting to check everything off as I go!
